The New Plymouth Food Bank is holding its annual Food Drive on the 4th of December which will involve over 200 volunteers out on the streets of New Plymouth and Bell Block collecting food for the Food Bank.
The Food Drive takes place from 5:30pm and volunteers/ vehicles are needed to collect and stack food. The objective of the Food Drive is to stockpile food on the shelves for the coming year.
"We take donations of food from individuals and business and then give this to individuals and families in need of food. We offer a hand up and not a hand out." said Sharon Wills Food Bank Manager.
The Food Bank is located on Vivian Street behind the Peace Hall and is open to clients Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12.30pm-2pm only. The rest of the week volunteers work to stock the shelves and pick up food.
Ms. Wills uses a Mitsubishi ASX purchased from WR Phillips to pick up donations from businesses and has found it to be an essential part of keeping the Food Bank shelves stocked.
"I purchased the ASX while in a previous role for its space and comfort and have found that the car is great for varying sized loads, seats up,seats down, parcel tray in or out and has a lot more room inside than you think!"
The Food Bank receives referrals from many agencies in New Plymouth including Women’s Refuge, Budget Advice, Community Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers, Tui Ora and Barnardo's as well as self-referrals.
Those wishing to volunteer non-perishable items, their services or a vehicle for use in the Food Drive can contact Sharon on 06 758 2757 or email: foodbank.np@gmail.com .
